People handle risk in different ways. Risk is an ever-present part of our lives. To try and totally eliminate risk is futile at best and sometimes it is downright delusional. If risk is truly woven into the fabric of our day-to-day life, we need to determine how we deal with risk when we have the freedom to be ourselves. This freedom is the ultimate state of success and satisfaction.
Some people instinctively embrace risk. They seek risk. It provides the “juice” in their lives. They improvise, innovate, try new approaches, even when their existing methods work well. They appear random to some people, when they simply seek a better way…or more electricity in their lives. And they aren’t afraid to roll the dice.
Others take risks, but at a more measured pace. They don’t go all in, but pay attention to sequential outcomes and will bail if it is going badly. In addition, they will accommodate or tolerate the risk-seekers, and are not afraid to try new things.
Still others seek to reduce risk. Sometimes they are seen as negative and restrained, when really they see the dangers and problems within a situation or strategy. They won’t dive off the cliff into the waterhole without seeing exactly how deep it is, and have a natural tendency to stick with what works.
There is no progress without risk. However, people need to approach risk in their own way, while accepting the different approaches taken by others. Anything is possible when we have teams that approach risk differently, and celebrate and utilize those differences. Today, take a look at the risks in your life, and determine how you can use it and deal with it to create a better future.
